INTEGRATING IDENTITY PROTECTION IN ONLINE MEETINGS, OKTA INTRODUCES NEW FEATURES

With the rapid development of technology, we today have the flexibility to work from the office, home or any location around the world. For organizations, platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams are increasingly becoming very practical and effective solutions for online events or meetings, helping connect them with employees and customers. However, the shift to remote or hybrid working has posed challenges for IT security teams in businesses: How to ensure that online meeting platforms can operate smoothly but Still safe and secure?

Introducing Okta Authentication for E2EE meetings

Online meeting data is important to organizations and partners, so they want to be confident that only those within their control are allowed to participate in the meeting. Recently, Okta partnered with Zoom to announce the new feature Okta Authentication for End-to-End Encrypted (E2EE) meetings

 in their security solution groups. This feature leverages Okta’s technology to authenticate attendee identities in end-to-end encrypted meetings using email. Identity authentication from Okta can help independently determine whether meeting guests are who they say they are.

Method of operation 

Zoom administrators or navigators can enable Okta Authentication for E2EE in the Security tab of the Zoom Web Portal. When this feature is used, meeting attendees can share their identities by enabling this feature in their personal settings.

Depending on their organization’s settings, they may be automatically verified or redirected to Okta’s website to complete login via 2-factor authentication. When a meeting attendee is authenticated, information with a padlock icon will appear next to the username in the meeting participant list. Anyone in that meeting can see a card that shows credentials about that person, including their company domain name and corresponding Okta-verified email address.

Apply Zero Trust to encrypted Zoom meetings

In fact, there have been many cases of bad actors impersonating in meetings and this technique is becoming increasingly sophisticated. This makes protecting the personal information of partners or organizations more important than ever. Therefore, online collaboration platforms need to have identity verification operations, such as Okta’s single-sign-on or multi-factor authentication methods.

Besides these core competencies, Zero Trust security architecture has also become a positive trend adopted by many organizations. Okta’s most recent “State of Zero Trust Security” report found that 97% of companies surveyed planned to deploy Zero Trust within the next 12 – 18 months. The core principle of Zero Trust is “never trust anyone until they have been verified”. With a Zero Trust approach, identity and access will be strictly controlled, which is extremely suitable for the context in which employees or partners are operating in today’s dynamic and diverse environment.

By leveraging Okta’s technology to apply Zero Trust to Zoom, IT security teams can help organizations reduce risk while ensuring user experience. In collaboration with Okta, Zoom has provided users with an additional layer of security, allowing them to verify the email identities of meeting attendees.
